Thoughts -- William Zhou

We had our first lecture on solely religious memorials today. I found this topic extremely fascinating because all these religious memorials have very dense history behind it. Tibet itself and Tibetan Buddhism has always interested me for their mysteriousness. Religion is a result of hardship, and Tibetan Buddhism is a result of Tibet's extreme natural environment and constant natural disasters. Therefore, Buddhism flourishes in Tibet. But, as Tibet started its modernization process partly due to the Chinese government's influence, it has gone through drastic changes. We can start to see existence of the mix of traditional Tibetan culture and industrialized factories and etc. The introduction of modern civilization into Tibet has significant positive impact over Tibetan people's daily life. And how does this development of regional economic and people's life style affect their attitudes toward the religion that was created as a result of hardship?
As we learnt today, one of the main teaching of Buddhism is that devout believer will be award with merit. In the past, I can imagine people would wish for harvest or peace as their merit. As the economic develops in Tibet, do the merit that Buddhists pray for change as well?
