Lee Chapel Response- Ian McDonald

Going to Lee Chapel was interesting and informative. It was fascinating to me how attached people were to the Confederate flags since they were a late addition. It was also interesting to hear Ms. Wilkins talk about how Lee Memorial had been altered over the years because of people outside the school. The flags didn't originate with W&L. To me, this was a strong example of how memorials can mean different things to different people. It also illustrated how conflicting claims can cause strife and conflict. I didn't know about all the ideas Lee brought to W&L, so it was neat learning about those. It made me feel as though Lee's Memorial was the schools, built for us.
